Scientific publishing involves a complex lifecycle connecting authors, reviewers, editors, publishers and research institutions.
A manuscript progresses through submission, editorial assessment, reviewer selection, peer review, revisions, decisions and eventual publication. Each stage introduces requirements around permissions, accurate metadata, document versions, communication, decision traceability and publishing standards.
Springer Nature needed a digital Product capable of supporting these workflows across a diverse portfolio of scientific journals while accommodating different editorial policies and operating practices.
The opportunity was to establish a more consistent, scalable platform that reduced dependence on fragmented communications and supported better collaboration throughout the manuscript lifecycle.
Peer-review processes combine intricate operational workflows with stringent expectations around accuracy, confidentiality and editorial integrity.
The platform needed to handle manuscript versions, reviewer assignments, annotations, author revisions, notifications and publication handoffs while maintaining reliable data and clear accountability.
Individual journals operated with differing policies, disciplines and workflow requirements, creating tension between standardisation and necessary flexibility.
The delivery programme also needed a consistent method for capturing requirements, validating complex behaviours, managing dependencies and coordinating releases across Product, Engineering, UX and editorial stakeholders.
As Principal Product Manager / Senior Business Analyst, directed Product discovery, workflow definition, technical analysis and Agile delivery for the global peer-review platform.
Worked with publishing and editorial stakeholders, UX, Engineering and Data Science to translate complex manuscript processes into usable, technically implementable Product capabilities.
Established a consistent Business Analysis and Product delivery methodology, incorporating governance, Kanban decision gates, acceptance criteria, quality assurance and release coordination.
Facilitated discovery with senior publishing, editorial and operational stakeholders to understand variations in manuscript submission, peer review, editorial decision-making and publication processes.
Mapped end-to-end journeys covering author submission, reviewer assignment, in-platform annotation, feedback, revision cycles, notifications, approvals and publication readiness.
Used user research and stakeholder workshops to identify pain points and shape reusable platform capabilities while retaining flexibility for journal-specific needs.
Translated approved requirements into functional specifications, BDD/Gherkin user stories and acceptance criteria for Engineering.
Defined workflow states, manuscript versioning, metadata, identifiers, notifications, exceptions and downstream publishing integration requirements.
Partnered with UX and Engineering to prototype, test and refine complex interactions, balancing usability with the procedural requirements of scientific publishing.
Established a programme-wide Business Analysis and Product delivery methodology, introducing standardised workflows, governance and Kanban decision gates.
Facilitated delivery planning, reviews, retrospectives and backlog prioritisation, performing Scrum Master responsibilities within a Kanban-led team.
Managed requirements traceability, blockers, release decisions and QA readiness, ensuring that complex editorial requirements remained connected to implementation and testing.
Worked with Data Science to define KPIs covering user experience, workflow quality and delivery efficiency.
Supported platform rollout across more than 50 journals, balancing common Product standards with differing editorial policies and publishing requirements.
Supported a global peer-review platform spanning more than 50 scientific journals, including Nature and Scientific Reports.
Established structured digital workflows across submission, review, revision, editorial decisions and publication handoff.
Introduced standardised Product governance, Business Analysis practices and Kanban decision gates.
Strengthened requirements traceability and delivery assurance through BDD/Gherkin acceptance criteria and QA alignment.
Established Product and workflow KPIs in collaboration with Data Science.
Improved coordination between editorial, UX, Engineering and delivery stakeholders through a common Product methodology.
The engagement demonstrated how complex, governance-intensive workflows can be transformed into coherent digital products without losing the controls and flexibility required by the business.
It brought together strategic Product leadership, detailed technical analysis, user-centred design and delivery governance in an environment where workflow accuracy and trust were essential.
The experience is particularly relevant to enterprise workflow platforms, regulated processes and products involving complex data and stakeholder relationships.
